Official checks usually contain watermarks, security threads, color-changing ink and other security features.

The watermark reads “U.S. TREASURY” and can be seen from both the front and back of the check when held up to a light. The watermark is light and cannot be reproduced by a copier. Any check not having the watermark should be suspected as being counterfeit or copied.

Artificial Water Marks: An artificial watermark can be produced by printing a pattern on the back of a document with transparent white or a coin reactive transparent white ink. To view the water mark image, the back of the document is usually tilted at a 45 degree angle to the light source in the room.

On All checks, the U.S. Treasury seal, located to the right of the Statue of Liberty contains security ink that turns reddish when moisture is applied to the black ink. Modifications have been made to the U.S. Treasury check. Microprinted words are printed so small that they appear as a line to the naked eye.

Some checks even contain authentic-looking watermarks, ing to the FTC. The bottom line is that, while the funds may be available in your account within days of your deposit, the check may take weeks to clear or bounce.
