The features that distinguish flatworms from worms in other phyla include their flat body (dorso-ventrally, or top-to-bottom, flattened as if someone had stepped on their backs), their primitive digestive cavity (gut) with only one opening, and their lack of a body cavity, or coelom.

Flatworms (phylum Platyhelminthes) are simple animals that are slightly more complex than a cnidarian. Roundworms (phylum Nematoda) have a slightly more complex body plan. Segmented worms (phylum Annelida) are the most complex animals with worm-like body plans.

Segmented worms have a complete circulatory system, while round worms do not. A segmented worm's circulatory system includes blood, heart, capillary system and hemoglobin. Roundworms have no hearts or blood vessels. Roundworms use diffusion to breathe and pass nutrients throughout their bodies.

They have five paired organs that act like hearts to pump their blood through large blood vessels. They have a brain and nerve cord. They have reproductive organs and waste-removal organs. Well-developed muscles let the worms crawl through the soil or on top of the ground.

The flatworms are acoelomates and do not have any coelom or cavity in their body whereas the roundworms have pseudo coelom also known as the false coelom and hence are known as pseudocoelomates and the segmented worms have true coelom and hence are known as coelomates.

Flatworms (phylum Platyhelminthes) are simple animals that are slightly more complex than a cnidarian. Roundworms (phylum Nematoda) have a slightly more complex body plan. Segmented worms (phylum Annelida) are the most complex animals with worm-like body plans.

Worms can be divided into three main groups - flatworms, segmented worms and roundworms, most of which have a long, soft body with no true legs.

Segmented worms are bilaterally symmetrical. Their body consists of a head region, a tail region, and a middle region of numerous repeated segments. Each segment is separate from the others by a structure called septa.
