(a) A temporary pilot, flight instruc- tor, or ground instructor certificate or rating is issued for up to 120 days, at which time a permanent certificate will be issued to a person whom the Ad- ministrator finds qualified under this part.

Prepared pilots are more likely to pass. In 2021, FAA data showed that 78% of all PPL pilots passed on their first attempt. In that same year, 79.5% of pilots passed their commercial pilot checkride, and the pass rate for CFI checkrides was 77.9%.

This AC provides guidance for pilot and instructor applicants, pilots, flight instructors, ground instructors, and examiners on certification standards, knowledge test procedures, and other requirements in Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) part 61.

The endorsement above is only valid for 90 days. If solo flight is necessary beyond this initial period, the instructor is required to provide more training and update the student's logbook with 14 CFR 61.87(p) every 90-days thereafter.

5 hours of solo cross country flying; 1 solo cross country flight of at least 150nm total distance with full stop landings at 3 points and one segment of at least 50nm between T/O and landings; and. 3 T/O's and landings to a full stop at an airport with an operating control tower.
