Signs of a Poor Breastfeeding Latch Your child is sucking in their cheeks as they try to breastfeed. Your baby does not have their lips out like a fish. You can see that they have their lips tucked in and under, instead. You can hear a clicking or smacking noises as your little one tries to suck.

The size and shape of your s do not affect your ability to breastfeed. Most babies can breastfeed no matter what mom's is like. Some women have s that turn inward instead of pointing outward or that are flat and do not stick out.

The total score ranges from 0 to 10; the higher the score, the more the chances of successful breastfeeding (Table 1). A LATCH score of 0–3 is regarded as poor, 4–7 as moderate, and 8–10 as good.

The most accurate measure of breastfeeding adequacy is the infant's rate of weight gain, documented by serial measurements. Peak infant weight loss occurs at approximately 3 days of age and should not exceed 7% of birth weight.

Usually, we talk about three Cs of breastfeeding: Calm, Comfortable and Close.

LATCH is a breastfeeding charting system that provides a systematic method for gathering information about individual breastfeeding sessions. The system assigns a numerical score, 0, 1, or 2, to five key components of breastfeeding. Each letter of the acronym LATCH denotes an area of assessment.

A breastfeeding assessment of the newborn includes assessing the infant's ability to latch and coordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing. Monitoring infant output, behaviour and weight must be conducted regularly as the newborn develops.
