How does match play work in a golf tournament?

Match play is a form of play where a player (or players) plays directly against an opponent (or opponents) in a head-to-head match. You win a hole by completing it in the fewest number of strokes, and you win a match when you are winning by more holes than remain to be played.

All elimination matches are 18 holes except for the final in individual competitions, which is 36 holes.

For instance, if Player A is 3-up with two holes to play, then Player B cannot catch up. Therefore the match is complete, and the final score would be 3-and-2. The first number represents the lead, while the second number signifies how many holes remained.

2-golfer team format that uses a 7-point match play scoring system -- 2 points for the first 3 holes, 2 points for the middle 3 holes, and 2 points for the final 3 holes. The final point is awarded to the team with the most total holes won.

Each player plays their own ball from tee to green. The player with the lowest net score on a given hole wins that hole for his team. The match is won by the team that is leading by a number of holes greater than the number of holes remaining to be played. (e.g., 4 up with 3 holes to play – known as winning 4 &3).

A doubles match play game applies the same concept, with a slight twist. Each player receives 90% of the difference between their handicap and lowest handicap in the group. The lowest handicapper again does not get any strokes. Again they receive the shots on the holes as identified by the stroke index.

Two-Person Best Ball Best ball (also known as fourball in the Ryder Cup) involves 2-person teams where each player on the team plays his or her own golf ball throughout the round. After each hole the player with the lowest score on the hole (or “best ball”) out of the 2-person team serves as the team's score.
