Schema Mode Inventory (SMI) Developed in 2008 and revised in 2009, Jeffery Young and his team created a questionnaire for measuring the strength of Schema Modes. Using 124 questions, it measures 14 modes, including Child Modes, Maladaptive Coping Modes, Dysfunctional Parent Modes and Healthy Adult.

The Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form (YSQ-SF) is a 75-item self-report questionnaire that measures 15 EMS (early maladaptive schemas). EMS are grouped in five broad domains: Disconnection and rejection, Impaired autonomy, Impaired limits, Other-directedness, and Over vigilance and inhibition.

The YSQ-L3 consists of 232 items measuring 18 different EMS using a six-point Likert scale ranging from 1 “completely untrue” to 6 “describes me perfectly”. Scores are the mean for each EMS subscale, with an average of four or higher indicating that EMS is clinically meaningful [1,43].

Computing Scores Each item on the YPI is scored on a rating scale from "1" to "6." The first schema on the YPI, Emotional Deprivation, is scored backward: that is, low scores of 1 or 2 indicate high ratings. All of the other schemas are scored normally: that is, high scores of "5" or "6" indicate high ratings.

Interpreting the Scores On the Long Form, we generally consider any score of 3 or more on a schema to be meaningful. On the Short Form, any score of 2 or more is usually meaningful. After scoring the YSQ, we explain to the patient which schemas received moderately high scores and which received very high scores.

The Young Schema Questionnaire L-3 (YSQ-L3) is a self-report instrument, based on the ST model, designed to assess 18 Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMSs). During the last decade, it has been translated and validated in different countries and languages.
