The animals in the Annelida are segmented worms. They have no legs, and no hard skeleton. Unlike mollusks, annelid bodies are divided into many little segments, like rings joined together. There are many other kinds of worms, but only annelids are segmented this way.

Annelid Features: Elongate and bilateral with segmented true body cavity (coelom) Complete circulatory system with capillaries, arteries and veins. Body wall made of circular and lengthwise muscles. Continuous gut running from mouth to anus. Bristle-like structures projecting from body called setae (except in leeches)

The Annelida body plan contains three main body regions: 1) the prostomium, or the head, 2) the trunk, or main body, and 3) the pygidium, the anus. The prostomium is located at the most anterior (forward) region of the worm containing most of the sensory organs.

The body of an annelid is often described as a tube within a tube. The inner tube, or digestive tract, is separated from the outer tube, or body wall, by the coelom. The head region (prostomium) is followed by a series of segments similar to each other in appearance.

Annelids are known commonly as segmented (ringed) worms. Some common names for more well-known annelids include earthworms, sandworms, ragworms, bristle worms, and leeches. Annelid classes include Oligochaeta, Hirudinea, Polychaeta, and Archiannelida.

Annelids are triploblastic (have three germ layers which include external ectoderm, middle mesoderm and internal endoderm).

annelid , Any member of a phylum (Annelida) of invertebrate animals that possess a body cavity (coelom), movable bristles (setae), and a body divided into segments by crosswise rings.

A major invertebrate phylum of the animal kingdom, the annelids number more than 9,000 species distributed among three classes: the marine worms (Polychaeta), which are divided into free-moving and sedentary, or tube-dwelling, forms; the earthworms (Oligochaeta); and the leeches (Hirudinea).
