Peripheral nerve blocks (PNB) are widely-used for surgical anesthesia as well as for both postoperative and nonsurgical analgesia. PNBs offer distinct benefits over general or neuraxial anesthesia in certain clinical situations [1].

A peripheral nerve block is an anesthetic practice used in many surgical procedures. It is accomplished by injecting a local anesthetic near the nerve controlling sensation or movement to the area of the body requiring surgery.

Continuous peripheral nerve blockade was described as early as 1946 by Ansbro. A series of patients having upper extremity surgeries received a cork-stabilized needle at the supraclavicular level of the brachial plexus. Other early reports include a similar practice in 1950 by Humphries.

Although peripheral nerve blocks are overall safe when performed correctly, there are rare but serious risks associated with them. Risks include block failure, bleeding, infection, damage to surrounding structures, permanent nerve injury, and intravascular uptake of local anesthetic resulting in systemic toxicity.

The word of Koller's discovery spread throughout the Western world like wildfire, and the first true nerve block—that of the mandibular nerve—was performed by an American surgeon, William Stewart Halsted, in December 1884.
