Micro. As part of a urinalysis, the urine sediment is centrifuged and examined microscopically for crystals, casts, red blood cells, white bloods cells, and bacteria or yeast.

In the routine urinary sediment examination, you may come across 4 types of nucleated cells: Squamous epithelial cells. Leukocytes. Transitional epithelial cells. Tubular epithelial cells.

5) Sediment volume: The supernatant urine should be removed with an aspirator or pipette or by decanta- tion to leave a sediment volume of 0.2 mL. This should be followed in principle because essential urine formed elements would be diluted if the sedi- ment volume exceeds 0.2 mL.

Organized urine sediment consists of biological elements such as leukocytes, erythrocytes, epithelial cells, casts, bacteria, fungi, parasites and sperm. Unorganized urine sediment contains crystals of various salts, for instance oxalate, phosphate, urate, and amorphous salts.

What causes urine sediment? kidney stones. improper hygiene. urinary tract abnormalities. diabetes. a catheter. sexual activity.

When used properly, urine sediment findings alert health care providers to the presence of kidney disease, while also providing diagnostic information that often identifies the compartment of kidney injury. Urine sediment findings may also guide therapy and assist in prognostication.

They are called transitional cells, renal (kidney) tubular cells, and squamous cells. If there are squamous epithelial cells in your urine, it may mean your sample was contaminated.
