A typical person has a platelet count of between 150,000 and 250,000 per microlitre of blood. About 80 to 90 per cent of patients with dengue will have levels below 100,000, while 10 to 20 per cent of patients will see critically low levels of 20,000 or less.

Essential criteria for admission If the platelet count tested more than 4 hours ago is more than 130 000/ mm3 the patient should be observed in the fever room and a repeat count should be done. If the repeat count is lower, decide on admission.

If an infection is suspected, you will get a blood test to check for the dengue virus. During a blood test, a health care professional will take a blood sample from a vein in your arm, using a small needle. After the needle is inserted, a small amount of blood will be collected into a test tube or vial.

About 96 (42.6%) patients of dengue cases received platelet transfusion. Among them 47 (20.88%) patients had a platelet count < 20,000/cumm, 43 (19.11%) had a platelet count in the range of 21-40,000/cumm while 6 (2.66%) patients had the platelet count in between 41 and 50,000/cumm.

The normal count of platelets is 1.5 lakh to 4.5 lakh per microlitre of blood. In viral fever, it reduces up to 90,000 to one lakh. In dengue, this count goes down to 20,000 or even lower, but reaches the normal once dengue is cured. In a viral fever this count comes to the normal range gradually.”

The Malaysia Ministry of Health reports 19,450 cumulative dengue fever cases through the first two months of 2023, an increase of some 212 percent compared to the same period in 2022 (6,229). In 2023 to date, 15 dengue-related fatalities have been reported in Malaysia, compared to two deaths same period last year.

To treat severe cases of dengue fever at a hospital, doctors will give intravenous (IV) fluids and electrolytes (salts) to replace those lost through vomiting or diarrhea. When started early, this is usually enough to effectively treat the disease.
