The Medicine Wheel teaches us that we have four aspects to ourselves: the physical, the mental, the emotional, and the spiritual. Each must be in balance and equally developed in order for us to remain healthy, happy individuals.

Meanings of the Four Directions Stages of life: birth, youth, adult (or elder), death. Seasons of the year: spring, summer, winter, fall. Aspects of life: spiritual, emotional, intellectual, physical. Elements of nature: fire (or sun), air, water, and earth.

The Medicine Wheel encapsulates four components of the human experience which are referred to as states of being. The components are Spiritual, Emotional, Physical, and Mental.

The holistic notion of body, mind, heart, and spirit is a time - honoured one for First Nations peoples but is somewhat of a novelty in mainstream society. It is however, a framework that is becoming more accepted as an important way to view the health of humans.

The spiritual being is represented on the medicine wheel by the yellow quadrant, which also represents the direction East, the element of Earth, the sacred medicine tobacco, and the season of Spring. Your spiritual being manifests itself as a connection to the greater world.

For example, Medicine Wheels are usually depicted through four directions but also include the sky, the earth and the centre. For Ojibwe people, the colours are yellow (east), red (south), black (west), white (north), Father Sky (blue), Mother Earth (green) and the self (Centre, purple).

Within the Circle of the Medicine Wheel can be found the 4 elements of Air, Water, Earth and Fire. As the students explore each of these elements, they expand their circle beyond the classroom to the natural world outside . From the Circle, they learned the importance of Balance and Harmony.

In addition to being a symbol of the natural cycles of life, the medicine wheel can also represent the Four Directions: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Medicine wheels can also incorporate images that tell the story of creation and represent deities like Father Sky, Mother Earth, and the Great Spirit.
