There is no Exempt Childcare in Michigan. If you are caring for any children that are not your own in your home, you must get registered or licensed.

Under Wisconsin law, no person may provide care and supervision for 4 or more children under the age of 7 for less than 24 hours a day unless that person obtains a license to operate a child care center from the Department.

Complete the Child Development and Care (CDC) License Exempt Provider Application, located at .michigan.gov/childcare. If you have not previously completed the one-time Great Start to Quality Orientation training, visit .miregistry.org or call 1-877-614-7328 to be registered for training.

License exempt (formerly known as unlicensed) Child Care Providers are adults, age 18 or older, who are enrolled to provide child care for up to six children at a time.

To provide childcare services in Michigan, you must obtain a license from the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Child Care Licensing Division (LARA).

The Child Care Licensing Bureau regulates family child care homes (1 to 6 children), group child care homes (7 to 12 children) and child care centers. Call CCLB at 1-866-685-0006 to get more information on becoming licensed or visit .michigan.gov/michildcare for more information about licensed child care.

Any person who provides care for one to six unrelated children in their home for more than four weeks in a calendar year for compensation exceeding $600 in that calendar year must be licensed as a family child care home.
