The progressive movement had four major goals: (1) to protect social welfare, (2) to promote moral improvement, (3) to create economic reform, and (4) to foster efficiency. Reformers tried to promote social welfare by easing the problems of city life. The YMCA built libraries and exercise rooms.

The Progressive Movement sought to address the many problems that arose during the Industrial Revolution and the Gilded Age. Its three main goals were eliminating corruption, strengthening democracy, and protecting laborers. One central goal of the Progressive Movement was to eradicate corruption.

The movement in the late 1800s to increase democracy in America by curbing the power of the corporation. It fought to end corruption in government and business, and worked to bring equal rights of women and other groups that had been left behind during the industrial revolution.

Progressivism arose during the Age of Enlightenment out of the belief that civility in Europe was improving due to the application of new empirical knowledge to the governance of society.

Progressives believed that the government needed to take a strong, proactive role in the economy, regulating big business, immigration, and urban growth.

The period was one of contrasts: the Gilded Age was characterised by opulence, wealth and rapid economic growth; the Progressive Era by political reform and social activism.

Mark Twain called the late 19th century the "Gilded Age." By this, he meant that the period was glittering on the surface but corrupt underneath.

Progressivism holds that it is possible to improve human societies through political action. As a political movement, progressivism seeks to advance the human condition through social reform based on purported advancements in science, technology, economic development, and social organization.
