What is Milpersman other than honorable?

An other than honorable (OTH) authorized discharge is awarded a discharge in “absentia;” the member must be in an unauthorized absence (UA) status, detention, or confinement status. Awarding an under honorable conditions (general) or honorable discharge while in a UA status is inappropriate.

The Criteria Generally, this discharge requires severe medical, psychological or financial problems in the member's immediate family. Medical and psychological problems are termed dependency, while financial problems are described as hardship, though many military personnel use the terms interchangeably.

c. Gain. A Reserve gain occurs when a Sailor's electronic. record is brought to full strength in Navy Standard Integrated. Personnel System (NSIPS), and the Duty Status Code (DSC) is 200.

A hardship discharge is intended to be used as an instrument to alleviate personal hardship encountered by an enlisted member's immediate family when discharge is the only solution.

Counselors at the GI Rights Hotline have helped many people in the military get honorably discharged for hardship/dependency. Usually within 4-10 weeks after applying, people are free from their military obligations and able to help their family members.

An example of a Hardship Discharge would be if you are married and have children, but your spouse dies, leaving you to the sole parent to children.

Hardship vs Dependency. Terminology can get confusing because "hardship" and "dependency" discharges are often both loosely labeled "hardship." Specifically, a hardship discharge is when the financial needs of family member(s) require more than the military member can provide while remaining in the military.

Voluntary separation (honorable discharge) — You may be moved to your home of record (or an equal or lesser distance) within 180 days of your separation date.
