Cold work permits are used in hazardous maintenance work that does not involve “hot work”. Cold work permits are issued when there is no reasonable source of ignition, and when all contact with harmful substances has been eliminated or appropriate precautions taken.

A hot work permit is used to prevent fire or explosion and will specifically detail the work to be carried out, how and when it is to be done and the precautions to be taken. The use of a permit system does not, by itself, make the job safe.

Hot-work permits are required for any operation involving open flames or producing heat and/or sparks and must be prepared by a competent person.
