The leader book is a tool for the NCO to maintain up-to-date, easy-to-reference information on soldiers, training status, maintenance status and equipment accountability. There are many versions of the leader book both in official Army publications and on the commercial market.

There are three basic styles of leadership decision-making: authoritarian, democratic, and laissez-faire. Leaders who use authoritarian decision-making make all the major group decisions and demand compliance from the group members.

The three levels of leadership are direct, organizational, and strategic; leader competencies apply to all levels.

There are 13 enlisted Army ranks: Private, Private Second Class, Private First Class, Specialist, Corporal, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Sergeant First Class, Master Sergeant, First Sergeant, Sergeant Major, Command Sergeant Major, and Sergeant Major of the Army.

"Toxic leadership is a combination of self-centered attitudes, motivations, and behaviors that have adverse effects on subordinates, the organization, and mission performance. This leader lacks concern for others and the climate of the organization, which leads to short- and long-term negative effects.

An Army leader is anyone who by virtue of assumed role or assigned responsibility inspires and influences people to accomplish organizational goals. Army leaders motivate people both inside and outside the chain of command to pursue actions, focus thinking, and shape decisions for the greater good of the organization.

Leadership at all levels is a paradigm, in which regardless of your title, tenure or compensation, you relate to your company as if you own the joint. That is, you generate ideas and make decisions from a place of ownership.
