Never use your high-beam headlights while you are driving in fog, rain, or snow. In such conditions, they can make your vision even worse. High beams will shine directly into the fog or precipitation, which will reflect the bright light back to you.

Although you may not need them to see where you're driving, your headlights should be switched on to make your vehicle easy to see. While many newer cars have daytime running lights and automatic headlight options, don't take those for granted.

At dusk and dawn. It may not be dark enough to officially require lights, but these times of day can create long shadows, glare and reduced visibility. Flipping on your lights makes you more visible to other drivers.

Regular Headlights Most of the newer cars these days have automatic headlights which will come on when it is dark out and turn off when there is enough light. If you don't have automatic headlights, it is good to turn them on when driving between dusk and dawn but also when it is raining.

If an approaching car is using its high-beams, don't look directly into the oncoming headlights—look toward the right edge of your lane. Watch the oncoming car out of the corner of your eye. Do not try retaliating against the other driver by keeping your high-beam lights on. If you do, both of you may be blinded.

Turn your headlights on from ½ hour after sunset until ½ hour before sunrise. Make sure your headlights are clean and working well. Have them checked from time to time for correct aim. Use your high beams when there are no oncoming vehicles.

Headlights must be in use from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise. The California driver's handbook also recommends using headlights on country roads or up in the mountains even on sunny days to make it easy for other drivers to see you.
