The ancient Chinese game of rock-paper-scissors is governed by three simple rules: rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, paper beats rock. On the face of it, the chances of winning are just one in three, but that presumes people pick rock, paper or scissors at random.

No matter how often you play rock-paper-scissors, if you randomly choose a strategy, there is a ⅓ chance that you win. However, when playing this game in actuality, there is a pattern in which a player can have the advantage.

What's the probability of the opponent choosing a losing hand (rock, paper or scissors)? Because there are only three possible outcomes with the same probability, they each are 1/3 = 0.33 probable to occur. The chance of you winning is the same as the probability of the opponent losing.

The theoretical probability is 50% because each choice can either win or lose against the other two. Therefore the odds of winning depend on your ability to guess your opponent's choices. There are three possible outcomes that are equally likely - win, lose, or draw.

In the game "Rock, Paper, Scissors," two opponents randomly toss out hand gestures, and each one wins, loses or draws with equal probability. It's supposed to be a game of pure luck, not skill — and indeed, if humans were able to be perfectly random, no one could gain an upper hand over anyone else.

The winner of the turn is determined by the following; Rock beats Scissors (rock blunts scissors); Scissors beats Paper (scissors cuts paper); Paper beats Rock (paper covers rock). If both players present the same gesture, the turn is a draw and repeated. Figure 1. Rock-Paper-Scissors Chart.
