NFPA 51B, Standard for Fire Prevention During Welding, Cutting, and Other Hot Work helps you reduce the risks associated with hot work projects. Requirements cover welding, heat treating, grinding, and other applications likely to produce sparks or flames.

This standard presents provisions to prevent injury, loss of life, and loss of property from fire or explosion as a result of hot work projects such as welding, heat treating, grinding, and similar applications producing or using sparks, flames, or heat.

NFPA 101-3.3. 91 Fire Watch. The assignment of a person or persons to an area for the express purpose of notifying the fire department, the building occupants, or both of an emergency; preventing a fire from occurring; extinguishing small fires; or protecting the public from fire or life safety dangers.

This Hot Work Permit is required for any operation involving open flame or producing heat and/or sparks. This work includes, but is not limited to, welding, brazing, cutting, grinding, soldering, thawing pipe, torch-applied roofing, or chemical welding.

NFPA 51B is required by reference, and therefore, compliance is not optional. OSHA references NFPA 51B, Standard for Fire Prevention During Welding, Cutting, and Other Hot Work, in 29 CFR 1910 Subpart Q, and NFPA 1, Fire Code, requires compliance with NFPA 51B in Chapter 41.

The NFPA 241 and NFPA 51B Standards, Safeguarding Construction and Fire Prevention Toolkit offers comprehensive coverage of practices and strategies for preventing fires, burns, and other dangers at sites, including underground locations and where construction, alteration, demolition, or hot work are taking place.
