DPS will make every effort to issue your license within 60 days of receiving the completed application packet. If the application is incomplete or requires additional information to complete the background check, you will be notified in the manner you selected on your application.

Texas requires applicants for handgun licenses to obtain evidence of handgun proficiency as a prerequisite to obtaining a license. The Texas Department of Public Safety is required to develop a course in handgun proficiency.

PROCESSING TIME: Once your completed application and other supporting documents are submitted, the State of Texas has up to 8 weeks from the time they receive ALL DOCUMENTS to process your License to Carry.

Beginning September 1, 2021, HB1927 made it legal in Texas for most people 21 or over to carry a handgun in a holster without a permit both openly and/or concealed. This law modified the previous open carry law from 2016 by eliminating the requirement to have a license to carry.

You must attend a four to six hour in-person or online classroom training and pass a written examination with a certified instructor. Classroom training will cover: Laws related to weapons and the use of deadly force. Handgun use and safety, including controlling and securing openly carried handguns.

The License to Carry a Handgun service allows you to apply for, renew, or check the status of a handgun license or instructor certification online with the Texas Department of Public Safety. Before you begin, please read the Texas Handgun Licensing Laws and Selected Statutes (download Adobe Reader).

Handgun license fees An original LTC costs $40. Renewals cost $40. Fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable.
