Scores can be interpreted as follows: 0-5 lower normal daytime sleepiness. 6-10 normal daytime sleepiness. 11-12 mild excessive daytime symptoms.

The propensity to fall asleep is rated as 0, 1, 2, or 3, where 0 corresponds to “never” and 3 to “a high chance of dozing” (Table F17–2). The maximum score is 24, and normal is assumed to be 10 or less. ESS scores of 16 or greater are associated with severe sleepiness.

Epworth Sleepiness Scale During this test, you will be asked to answer eight questions using a scale from 0 (not at all likely to fall asleep) to 3 (very likely to fall asleep). The resulting score is between 0 and 24. Scores of 0 to 10 are normal. Total scores 10 or above generally warrant further investigation.
