In order to become a business that is authorized to purchase merchandise that is exempt from tax, you will need to obtain either a retailer account ID number or a reseller resale number. Once you have obtained your number, you will need to complete the State of Illinois Form CRT-61 Certificate of Resale.

A CRT-61 certificate of resale for Illinois must include: The name and address of the seller. The name and address of the purchaser. A description of the items that are being purchased for resale. A statement affirming that any items being purchased are being acquired exclusively for resale.

Visit: https://mytax.illinois.gov to REGISTER AND COMPLETE THE REG-1 FORM. This is very important – there is an 8 digit number that is used on the Certificate of Reseller form that you need to obtain from the My Tax Illinois website.

The Sales Tax Permit allows a business to sell and collect sales tax from taxable products and services in the state, while the Resale Certificate allows the retailer to make tax-exempt purchases for products they intend to resell. After registering, a sales tax number will be provided by the Department of Revenue.

To document tax-exempt purchases of such items, retailers must keep in their books and records a certificate of resale. Purchasers may either document their tax-exempt purchases by completing Form CRT-61, Certificate of Resale, or by making their own certificate.
