ZIP Codes are numbered with the first digit representing a certain group of U.S. states, the second and third digits together representing a region in that group (or perhaps a large city) and the fourth and fifth digits representing a group of delivery addresses within that region.

Place the city, state, and ZIP Code in that order on the last line. This must be the last line. Never place an “attention line,” telephone number, or other entries after the ZIP Code line. The “attention line” should be placed at the top.

Required in the return address of all mail on which postage is paid with precanceled stamps or company permit imprint, and in the sender's return address on Periodicals mail when "Address Service Requested" is specified. Official mail (penalty mail) also requires a ZIP Code™ in the return address.

Writing the wrong ZIP Code with the right address usually causes the letter to be delivered about a day later than if the ZIPCode were correct. As long as the mailing address is correct, the letter will be delivered.

The return address is not required on postal mail. However, lack of a return address prevents the postal service from being able to return the item if it proves undeliverable; such as from damage, postage due, or invalid destination. Such mail may otherwise become dead letter mail.
