Injection wells are used to tap geothermal energy in hot, porous rock formations below the surface by injecting fluids into the ground, which is heated in the ground, then extracted from adjacent wells as fluid, steam, or a combination of both.

An injection well is used to place fluid underground into porous geologic formations. These underground formations may range from deep sandstone or limestone, to a shallow soil layer. Injected fluids may include water, wastewater, brine (salt water), or water mixed with chemicals.

Wells used to inject non-hazardous waste into or above a USDW. Class V wells are commonly referred to as the shallow wells. This is the largest class of injection wells with over 6000 Class V wells in Illinois alone. The owner of a Class V well is not required to obtain a permit prior to beginning injection.

While a production well is used to extract oil or gas from the subsurface, injection wells are used to safely dispose of waste generated from those production operations or, in some cases, to increase production from nearby producing wells.

A form of secondary production, gas injection is used on a well to enhance waning pressure within the formation. Systematically spread throughout the field, gas-injection wells are used to inject gas and effectively sweep the formation for remaining petroleum, boosting production.
