Triploid grass carp are considered a natural method for controlling aquatic vegetation and macro-algae. ... They prefer softer, pliable aquatic vegetation. This desire for delicate vegetation reduces tendencies to eat most emergent and floating aquatic vegetation species.

The key difference between diploid and triploid grass carp is that diploid grass carp is a fish species that possess two sets of chromosomes and is able to reproduce while triploid grass is a sterile fish species that possess three sets of chromosomes including an extra set of chromosomes.

Triploid grass carp is a sterile (non-reproducing) form of grass carp. This fish is primarily a plant-eater and is a relatively inexpensive and effective biological tool to control some, but not all, species of nuisance aquatic vegetation.

Triploid grass carp must be purchased from a Texas aquaculture facility with a current Exotic Species Permit. A listing of aquaculture facilities with a current Exotic Species Permit will be included with the permit. Aquaculture facilities or their agents may deliver or buyers may transport triploid grass carp.

Grass carp are potentially harmful to native resources. Currently, only triploid (sterile) grass carp are legal for use in Texas, and a permit is required to obtain them.

Grass carp will not control filamentous algae (moss) growth, except at stocking rates far beyond those suggested, which leads to other complications.

The grass carp grows very rapidly. Young fish stocked in the spring at 20 cm (7.9 in) will reach over 45 cm (18 in) by fall. The average length is about 60 100 cm (23.5 39.5 in). The maximum length is 2.0 m (6.6 ft) and they grow to 45 kg (99 lb).

Cost: Triploid grass carp cost between $5 and $15 each and are usually stocked at three to ten fish per acre, resulting in costs as low as $15 per acre. In comparison, herbicides cost between $100 and $500 per acre and mechanical control may cost more than twice that.
