What is pronoun agreement for Grade 7?

❖ A pronoun must agree with its antecedent in number, gender, and person. An antecedent is the noun or pronoun that a pronoun refers to or replaces. ❖ If the antecedent is singular, use a singular pronoun. If it is plural, use a plural pronoun.

Pronoun - Antecedent Agreement A pronoun takes the place of a noun. The pronoun which replaces the noun must agree with it in these ways: a) A subject pronoun must replace a subject noun. b) A feminine pronoun must replace a feminine noun. c) A singular pronoun must replace a singular noun.

A pronoun must match its antecedent in number. In other words, if the antecedent is plural, the pronoun must be plural, and if the antecedent is singular, the pronoun must be singular. EXAMPLE: Freddy wears his Superman outfit at least twice a week.

Agreement in Person Pronouns one, everyone, everybody are third person pronouns. They should be followed by he, his, him or she, her, hers. Incorrect: One should carefully consider your choice of major.

EXAMPLE: Freddy wears his Superman outfit at least twice a week. (Since the word Freddy is singular, the pronoun that refers to it is also singular.) EXAMPLE: Freddy's parents believe that their son is slightly peculiar. (Because the word parents is plural, the pronoun referring to it must also be plural.)

For example, in the sentence: Chelsey finished her presentation, "Chelsey" is the antecedent and "her" is the pronoun. Pronouns should agree in number, person, and gender with their antecedents. If the antecedent is singular, the pronoun should be singular. If the antecedent is plural, the pronoun should be plural.

Rule #1: A pronoun and its antecedent must agree. They should both be singular or both be plural.

If, for example, your pronoun is “it,” it should not be referring back to the antecedent “Molly.” “Molly” is a person, so the better pronoun is “she.”
