A pre-operation inspection is a visual inspection of a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) performed by the operator prior to each work shift. The inspection is designed to discover if anything is apparently wrong with a machine before it is put into service.

MEWP operators should have attended a recognised operator training course and received a certificate, card or 'licence', listing the categories of MEWP the bearer is trained to operate. The expiry date of the training licence or card should be checked.

There are two key points all MEWP operators should understand: Primary fall protection on all MEWPs is provided by the guardrail system, which wraps around the container. Secondary fall protection may be required by the standards for MEWPs in North America, or by employer or government regulations.

1 Perform a visual inspection of all aerial lift components, missing parts, torn or loose hoses, hydraulic fluid leaks, and replace as necessary. 2 Check to see if all oil, hydraulic, fuel and coolant are all at proper fluid levels. 3 Check the wheels tires for damage. Check the wheel lugs for tightness.

Be sure that all structural and other critical components are present and all associated fasteners and pins are in place and properly tightened. After completing the inspection, operators should be sure that all compartment covers are in place and latched.

Pre-use inspections are required before use of any equipment or work process that has a potential to result in a severe loss. This inspection must be recorded in a log that is kept on the equipment or near the process and be available for review.

An inspection checklist, when used properly, is an assurance that a particular piece of equipment has been inspected. As each item on the checklist is ticked off, the person doing the inspection is verifying that each component of the equipment is in correct working order.
