A small instrument is inserted into the incision and the cloudy lens material is removed from the eye. Depending on the age of your child and the condition of his or her eye, the doctor might replace your child's cloudy lens with a small, plastic lens called an intraocular (in-tra-OCK-yoo-ler) lens.

The goal of IOL implantation is to achieve the best refractive outcome while avoiding complications. IOLs can be implanted in various sites, including in the anterior chamber, tied to the iris, in the ciliary sulcus (the space between the anterior lens capsule and iris), and in the capsular bag.

Most surgeons fold the IOL to fit inside the hole in the capsule and allow the lens to unfold and open, so that it is now larger than the hole through which it was placed into the empty grape skin or capsule. The lens should stay there forever.

During cataract surgery, the clouded lens is removed, and a clear artificial lens is usually implanted. In some cases, however, a cataract may be removed without implanting an artificial lens. Surgical methods used to remove cataracts include: Using an ultrasound probe to break up the lens for removal.

A week or so before your surgery, your doctor performs a painless ultrasound test to measure the size and shape of your eye. This helps determine the right type of lens implant (intraocular lens, or IOL).

A monofocal lens is the most common type of lens used in cataract surgery, according to AAO. This type of lens is designed to give you crisp, clear vision at one particular distance.

The first reported surgical removal of a cataract from the eye occurred in Paris in 1748. The advent of topical anesthesia made this procedure more practical. The early techniques involved removing the entire opaque lens in one piece using an incision that went halfway around the circumference of the cornea.

The IOL Master uses a process called interferometry, where a single light source is split into two wavelengths with mirrors, then directed into the eye and the pattern generated is used by a computer to provide measurements of the eye. This is a completely noninvasive test that poses no risk to the patient.

During the operation, the surgeon will make a tiny cut in your eye to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear plastic one. With the NHS, you will usually be offered monofocal lenses, which have a single point of focus. This means the lens will be fixed for either near or distance vision, but not both.

Yes, an intraocular lens (IOL) can be removed and replaced, but it may not be an easy procedure and may have potential complications to vision. Such procedures are very rare because intraocular once implanted are permanent.
