Laycan means the period of time in which a vessel must arrive at the port of loading defined by an end and start date.

A laytime is a free time (allotted time) given to the charterer of a vessel for loading or unloading. During the allotted time, the charterer has to load or unload his goods on the available free time written in the charter agreement.

Laydays refers to a period of specified days (e.g. “Jan 7/16”) during which owners must present the vessel for loading. Laydays should not be confused with laytime, which is the period allowed to the charterers for loading and/or discharging without payment additional to the freight.

Laytime or lay time, is defined as “the period of time agreed between the parties during which the Owner will make and keep the vessel available for loading or discharging without payment additional to the freight”.

Laydays refers to a range of dates within the charter party where the ship is expected to present itself at the loading port, ready to load the cargo. This date range is usually agreed upon by both parties during the negotiation of the contract. Cancelling, on the other hand, is the final date in the range of laydays.

The right to cancel usually arises when owners fail to deliver the ship by the cancelling date or if the ship is not ready to load by the cancelling date. The cancelling date can either be a fixed date or a laycan period to which the right to cancel is only exercisable after the laycan period.

Laydays - Days allowed by the shipowner to the voyage charterer or Bill of Lading holder in which to load and / or discharge the cargo. See also laytime. Laytime - Time allowed by the shipowner to the voyage charterer or Bill of Lading holder in which to load and / or discharge the cargo.

Laydays are defined in different ways such as: Running days – Includes consecutive days including weekends and holidays. Working days – Includes consecutive days excluding weekends and holidays. Weather working days – Includes days on which the weather permits to continuous work of cargo loading and unloading.
