What you need to do. The law says you must prevent danger to workers in or near excavations. To maintain the required precautions, a competent person must inspect excavation supports or battering at the start of the working shift and at other specified times. No work should take place until the excavation is safe.

Employers must ensure that a competent person inspects all excavations, adjacent areas, and protective systems daily for possible cave-ins, indications of failures in protective systems and equipment, hazardous atmospheres, and other hazardous Page 19 Trenching and Excavation Safety 1 3 conditions.

OSHA standards require, before any worker entry, that employers have a competent person inspect trenches daily and as conditions change to ensure elimination of excavation hazards.

The inspection of excavations, their supports, cofferdams and caissons is required: At the start of each shift. After any event likely to have affected the strength or stability of the excavation (e.g. flooding). After any material unintentionally falls or is dislodged.

The excavations need to be inspected for hazardous conditions that include, but are certainly not limited to: Evidence of a potential cave-in, Indications of impending failure of protective systems (i.e., shoring, shielding, sloping), and. Potential hazardous atmospheres.

Inspect your trenches daily before work begins. It is important you check for any fallen machinery, equipment or even PPE that may have been left haphazardly within your excavation area. It also helps to familiarise yourself with the job at hand to ensure the entire team is working towards a unified goal.

Any work carried out involving a trench or shaft excavated to a depth of 1.5m or greater is deemed to be high risk construction work and requires a safe work method statement.

5. Conducting site inspections. Before workers enter a trench each day, OSHA excavation standards require it to be inspected by a competent person. This move is made to ensure no excavation hazards are present.
