In your MLA Works Cited list, dates are always written in day-month-year order, with the month abbreviated if it's five or more letters long, e.g. 5 Mar. 2018. In the main text, you're free to use either day-month-year or month-day-year order, as long as you use one or the other consistently.

The international standard recommends writing the date as year, then month, then the day: YYYY-MM-DD. So if both Australians and Americans used this, they would both write the date as 2019-02-03. Writing the date this way avoids confusion by placing the year first.

American usage calls for a month/day/year date format, the United Kingdom and much of Europe use a day/month/year format, and most countries in Asia use the year/month/day format.

Writers should write out the month, give a space before writing the numeral for the day, follow that with a comma and space, and then, write the numeral for the year followed by a period.

dd/MM/yyyy — Example: 23/06/2013. yyyy/M/d — Example: 2013/6/23. yyyy-MM-dd — Example: 2013-06-23.

The most common way for writing dates in English is to use day/month/year format (also denoted as DD/MM/YYYY). For example, if you were writing the date for the fifth of January , 2022, you would write it as 05/01/22.

The YYYY - MM - DD format is the only officially recommended method of writing a numeric date in Canada. The presence of the DD / MM / YY (most of the world) and MM / DD / YY (American) formats often results in misinterpretation.
