Smog Check Exemptions for Nevada Drivers If your vehicle falls under one of the following categories, it is exempt from testing: New motor vehicles on their first and second registration. New hybrid-electric vehicles for the first 5 model years. Vehicles made in the 1967 model year or older model year.

A classic vehicle must be at least 25 years old with no modifications made to it before its owner applies for registration. A classic rod plate requires a vehicle to be manufactured no earlier than 1949, but at least 20 years before the time of registration.

Classic Vehicle Exemption Vehicles registered with Classic Vehicle, Classic Rod or Old Timer license plates and driven 5,000 miles or less per year are exempt from emission testing.

A car is considered a classic in Nevada if it's at least 25 years old, has not been driven more than 5,000 miles since the preceding annual registration, and has passed an emissions test.

A resident of the State of Nevada who owns a passenger car or light duty, non-commercial vehicle (having a manufacturer's rated carrying capacity of 1 ton or less), manufactured not earlier than 1949, but at least 20 years prior to the date of application, may apply for Classic Rod license plates.
