Footnotes and endnotes are used in printed documents to explain, comment on, or provide references for a text in a report. Many people use footnotes for detailed comments and endnotes for citation of sources. Footnotes typically appear at the end of each page, whereas endnotes appear at the end of the document.

The difference between a Footnote and an Endnote is where they are displayed in the document. A footnote appears at the bottom of the page, and an endnote appears at the end of a document. Both references are created similarly. There's no need to type the note's number, it's done automatically.

Use footnotes and endnotes to explain, comment on, or provide references to something in a document. Usually, footnotes appear at the bottom of the page, while endnotes come at the end of the document or section.

Deleting All Footnotes Press Ctrl+H to display the Replace tab of the Find and Replace dialog box. (See Figure 1.) In the Find What box, enter ^f. This indicates that you want to search for footnote marks. Make sure the Replace With box is empty. Click on Replace All. Close the Find and Replace dialog box.

How to write a footnote. Within the text, place a footnote signal directly after the passage that the footnote relates to. Footnote signals should come after punctuation and at the end of sentences when possible. The only exception is the dash (—), in which case the footnote signal comes before, not after.

Deleting Extraneous Carriage Returns in Footnotes and Endnotes Click View > Draft. Click References > Show Notes. Your cursor should now be in the Notes pane. Click Home > Replace. In the “Find What” box, enter two paragraph codes: ^p^p. In the “Replace With” box, enter one paragraph code: ... Click the “Replace All” button.

Footnotes are notes indicated in your text with numbers and placed at the bottom of the page. They're used to provide: Citations (e.g., in Chicago notes and bibliography) Additional information that would disrupt the flow of the main text.

Remove a footnote If you want to delete the footnote (that's at the bottom of the page), delete the number “1” in the body. When you do that, the footnote itself disappears. Another way you can do this is to right-click the footnote at the bottom of the page, select Go to Footnote and then delete the number there.
