Thomas Jefferson faced several important challenges: the judicial problem, which began on his inauguration, the Lousiana Purchase, and international problems. The first one came from the judiciary.

In 1802 President Thomas Jefferson was accused of fathering a child by Sally Hemings, one of his slaves.

As one of the largest slave owners in Virginia, Jefferson frequently engaged in human trafficking. He enslaved more than 700 people, physically disciplining those he deemed incompetent. The brutal treatment he enacted upon other human beings demonstrated his utter disregard for the rights of others.

It is important to note that many Jeffersonian beliefs and ideals turned out to be more idealistic than realistic. Jefferson himself abandoned many of his own principles while president, as did his Jeffersonian-minded friend James Madison.

In the draft, Jefferson argues that Parliament has no governing rights over the colonies and asserts that the colonies have been independent since their founding. He describes the usurpations of power and deviations from law committed by King George III as well as by Parliament.

His sympathy for the French Revolution led him into conflict with Alexander Hamilton when Jefferson was Secretary of State in President Washington's Cabinet. He resigned in 1793. Sharp political conflict developed, and two separate parties, the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans, began to form.

Jefferson gradually assumed leadership of the Republicans, who sympathized with the revolutionary cause in France. Attacking Federalist policies, he opposed a strong centralized Government and championed the rights of states.
