A carrier code is a unique four character code used by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to identify marine carriers, regardless of how often they cross the Canadian border with commercial goods. There are two main types of carrier code, bonded and non-bonded.

CIC, short for “Carrier Identification Code,” is a unique four-digit code given by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) to carriers and other entities. As a unique identifier, a CIC is used for billing purposes and routing calls over the interconnected public switched telephone network (PSTN).

If you are familiar with the SCAC code (USA carriers), then this is basically the Canadian version of the code used in identifying carriers. Canadian ACI eManifest systems use this code at border crossing, and you will find it at the beginning of the trip number and Cargo Control Number (CCN).
