A supplemental type certificate ( STC ) is a type certificate ( TC ) issued when an applicant has received FAA approval to modify an aeronautical product from its original design.

An STC applicant submits a certification plan to the FAA that details the proposed alteration to a type-certified product and how that alteration will comply with the applicable FAA regulations and guidance material. The FAA reviews the certification plan and issues an STC project number if the plan is accepted.

Any STC is, by definition, a major alteration and also requires a 337 form.

The purpose of an STC is to create a permanent certified approval for the modifition of an aircraft in a particular way. The purpose of a 337 is to document a major repair or alteration of an aircraft.

Supplemental type certificates are approved and issued through the FAA Aircraft Certification Office (ACO) which serves the geographic area of the supplemental type certificate owner's residence.

In ance with the Code of Federal Regulations, FAA certificate holders are required to update their mailing address within 30 days of obtaining a new address. An updated certificate will not be issued.
