About Us. Founded in 1907, Cass Technical High School is the largest Detroit Public Schools Community District school currently serving over 2400 students in grades 9 – 12.

Cass Technical High School is an above average, public, magnet school located in DETROIT, MI. It has 2,465 students in grades 9-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 25 to 1.

Opened in 1907, the original Cass Technical High School, commonly referred to as Cass Tech, was located at 2501 Second Avenue in Detroit. Named in honor of Lewis Cass, the school was located on the top floor of the old Cass Union School, a three-story brick building built in 1861 on a farm donated by Lewis Cass.

Cass Technical High School was finally demolished in 2011 after laying abandoned and decaying for a number of years. It joined the long list of abandoned buildings in Detroit as a result of the financial crisis and changes to the motor industry which provided a large number of jobs in the area.

Ground was broken for the new school building in April of 2002, with the first spade being turned over by Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, himself a graduate of Cass Tech. Construction was finished three years later and the new Cass Tech opened in September of 2005.
