Welcome to California! The procedure for transferring your out-of-state license is similar to that for applying for a new California driver's license. You must pass a vision exam and a written knowledge test. If your out-of-state license has expired, you'll have to pass a driving (road) test too.

Do I need to take in-car driving lessons? Yup, if you're between 15 and 18 years old! In order to earn your license, the state of California requires you to take at least six hours of in-car driving lessons with a licensed driving instructor in a DMV-approved program.
