Juvenile courts deal not only with delinquency and status offenses, but also with issues concerning dependency and neglect, child abuse, child support, custody issues, establishing parentage, visitation, and the need for medical and/or mental health treatment for children.

Juvenile justice systems vary greatly by jurisdiction. The organization of courts, case processing procedures, and juvenile corrections facilities are determined by state law. Most juvenile courts have jurisdiction over criminal delinquency, abuse and neglect, and status offense delinquency cases.

Courts with juvenile jurisdiction may handle a variety of matters, including child abuse and neglect, traffic violations, child support, and adoptions. This Report focuses on cases involving juveniles charged with law violations (delinquency or status offenses).

(d) (1) (A) The juvenile court has concurrent jurisdiction and statewide jurisdiction with other courts having the jurisdiction to order support for minor children and shall have statewide jurisdiction over the parties involved in the case.

Whatever their name, courts with juvenile jurisdiction are generically referred to as juvenile courts.

Tennessee law says that, after a youth has been found to be delinquent (in adult court terms - they were found guilty), the juvenile court can place a youth “under the supervision of the probation officer of the Department of Children's Services (DCS).”

The juvenile court has jurisdiction over acts of delinquency, which describes any behavior a juvenile commits that would be a crime if committed by an adult. In addition, delinquency typically includes status offenses. A status offense is any act committed by a juvenile by an adult.

The Juvenile Court Clerk's office is the first point of call for viewing or copying records. Use the court directory to locate the court address and to get more information. Access to a court is possible if the names of the juvenile party, the county of arrest or conviction are available.
