Act, which created the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The NFIP was designed to reduce future flood losses through the adoption of local floodplain management regulations and to provide protection for property owners against potential losses through an insurance mechanism that allows a premium to be paid for the protection of those who need it most. The creation of the NFIP represented a major shift in Federal strategy from previous structural flood-control and disaster relief programs.

In 1979, the Federal Insurance Administration (FIA) and the NFIP were trans- ferred to the newly created Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The emergency program is the initial phase of a community's participation in the NFIP. Only limited amounts of coverage are available under this program. The regular program is the final phase of a community's participation in the NFIP.

The NFIP is often referred to as a “three-legged stool”, meaning there are 3 different parts that help support the program – Flood Insurance, Floodplain Development Regulations, and Floodplain Maps.

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is managed by the FEMA and is delivered to the public by a network of more than 50 insurance companies and the NFIP Direct. Floods can happen anywhere — just one inch of floodwater can cause up to $25,000 in damage. Most homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.

A 6-digit designation identifying each NFIP community. The first 2 numbers are the state code. The next 4 are the FEMA-assigned community number. An alphabetical suffix is added to a community number to identify revisions in the Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for that community.

FEMA Form 086-0-33: Use this form to provide elevation information needed to comply with community floodplain management ordinances; to determine the proper insurance premium rate; and or support a request for a Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA) to remove a building from the Special Flood Hazard Area.

Q: What's the main difference between NFIP and private flood insurance? A: The NFIP is a federal government program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Private flood insurance, on the other hand, is written by private insurance carriers who are free to offer as much coverage as they want.
