When is a fire watch required? OSHA requires employers to post a fire watch during hot work if any of the following conditions are present (1915.504(b)): 1. Slag, weld splatter, or sparks which might pass through an opening and cause a fire.

108 defines a fire watch as “The assignment of a person or persons to an area for the express purpose of notifying the fire department, the building occupants, or both of an emergency; preventing a fire from occurring; extinguishing small fires, or protecting the public from fire or life safety dangers.”

NFPA 51B, Standard for Fire Prevention During Welding, Cutting, and Other Hot Work helps you reduce the risks associated with hot work projects. Requirements cover welding, heat treating, grinding, and other applications likely to produce sparks or flames.

Having a fire watcher on hand is a temporary measure required by the National Fire Protection Association's NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. The NFPA 25 Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems adds to this by requiring the fire watch to be conducted by trained personnel.

A fire watch shall be maintained for at least a half hour after completion of welding or cutting operations to detect and extinguish possible smoldering fires. Authorization. Before cutting or welding is permitted, the area shall be inspected by the individual responsible for authorizing cutting and welding operations.

A fire watch is the person or persons responsible for continuously observing hot work activity for the detection of, and response to, fires during hot work operations. A fire watch has the authority to stop work if necessary and conduct essential steps for restoring safe conditions within the hot work area.

The NFPA requires a fire watch to be implemented if a system is down for more than four hours in a 24-hour timeframe. Water-based fire protection systems need to be down for 10 hours or longer in a 24-hour timeframe. In either situation, the fire department must be notified.

Fire Watchman responsibilities include: Patrolling areas where hot work is being performed and maintaining vigilance of potential fires. Being familiar with facilities and procedures for sounding an alarm in the event of a fire and having a means of notifying emergency services.
