The FAP allowed many artists for the first time to work exclusively as artists without taking up side jobs, and it brought the art they created in a variety of styles to communities and cities around the country through murals, easel paintings, photographs, posters, and sculptures.

The Art in Architecture Program oversees the commissioning of artworks for federal buildings nationwide. These artworks enhance the civic meaning of federal architecture and showcase the vibrancy of American visual arts.

Architecture is a hybrid of art, technology, and building, and art is a form of human expression that may be shared and interpreted. The association between architecture and art has often been a complementary collaboration.

The Work Progress Administration's Federal Art Project (WPA/FAP) was part of a wider government program called Federal Project No. 1, which included the visual arts as well as drama, music and writing. It was started in 1935 and was administered ing to the relief rules of the WPA.

The Federal Art Project took on the whole nation as part of the project. It brought exhibitions, educational centers, and art lessons across regions that had not been well-served, and into communities that had very much been disenfranchised from culture.

It was created “to provide work relief for artists in various media – painters, sculptors, muralists and graphic artists, with various levels of experience” [1]. FAP was funded directly by the federal government and operated nationwide until 1939.
