Creep and Stress Rupture Tests are conducted at temperatures up to +2200°F to either ASTM E139 (creep and smooth-bar stress rupture) or ASTM E292 (notch tests). Temperature and creep readings are recorded by computers and continuously monitored to ensure utmost accuracy.

The creep test is conducted using a tensile specimen to which a constant stress is applied, often by the simple method of suspending weights from it. Surrounding the specimen is a thermostatically controlled furnace, the temperature being controlled by a thermocouple attached to the gauge length of the specimen, Fig.

The creep test is divided into three stages—primary creep, secondary creep and tertiary creep.

ASTM D2990 specifies tests for Compression, Flexural, and Tensile analysis. Creep Modulus and Creep Strain are two values unique to this type of test.

Lever arm testing machines are ideal for classic creep tests with test durations up to 100,000 hours. Force is applied via dead weight or a pretensioned spring up to a maximum test force of 100 kN.

Creep tests on plastics are described in the following standards: ISO 899-1 and ISO 899-2, as well as ASTM D2990. A full notch creep test (FNCT) to ISO 16770 is used to test pipes. Since this type of test runs over a long period of time, it is typical to test multiple specimens at once.
