Oregon Statewide Transit Tax Takes Effect July 1, 2018. The Oregon legislature recently passed House Bill (HB) 2017, which creates a new statewide transit tax on Oregon residents and nonresidents working in Oregon to fund state highway upgrades. Employees become subject to this new tax on July 1, 2018.

The Statewide Transit Tax is not the same as transit payroll taxes (TriMet and Lane Transit). The Statewide Transit Tax is a tax on employee wages that are deducted, withheld, reported, and paid to the Department of Revenue by the employer. This requirement mirrors the requirements for state income tax withholding.

The Tri-Met tax rate is to be 0.7637 percent of gross payroll, up from 0.7537 percent in 2018, and the Lane County Mass Transit District (LTD) tax rate is to be 0.74 percent of gross payroll, up from 0.73 percent in 2018, the department said on its website.

The Oregon transit tax is a statewide payroll tax that employers withhold from employee wages. Starting July 1, 2018, Oregon employers must withhold 0.1% (0.001) from each employee's gross pay.
