How to fill out the Pirep Decoder online
The Pirep Decoder is an essential tool for accurately encoding and reporting pilot weather observations, known as PIREPs. This guide will walk you through the process of filling out the Pirep Decoder online, ensuring that you complete each section correctly and efficiently.
Follow the steps to fill out the Pirep Decoder effectively.
- Click 'Get Form' button to obtain the form, which will allow you to access the Pirep Decoder in an online format.
- Enter the 3-letter SA identifier for your report in the /OV section. This identifier represents the location of the report and can follow formats such as /OV ABC or /OV ABC-DEF.
- Indicate the time of your report using the /TM field. Enter four digits in GMT (for example, /TM 0915 for 9:15 AM).
- Specify the altitude or flight level in the /FL field. Use three digits to represent hundreds of feet or state UNKN if unknown (e.g., /FL 095 for 9,500 feet).
- Provide the type of aircraft using the /TP section, entering a maximum of four digits. If the aircraft type is not known, you can use UNKN (for example, /TP B727).
- In the /SK section, describe cloud layers by stating the height of the cloud base, cover symbol, and cloud tops using the correct format. An example is /SK 025 BKN 045.
- Report flight visibility and weather conditions in the /WX field, beginning with visibility followed by standard weather symbols (e.g., /WX FV02 R H).
- Enter the air temperature in the /TA field, using Celsius. If the temperature is below zero, prefix with a hyphen (e.g., /TA -06 for -6°C).
- Specify wind conditions in the /WV field with a six-digit representation indicating direction and speed (e.g., /WV 270045 for 270° at 45 knots).
- Indicate the level of turbulence in the /TB section, using established abbreviations for intensity and type (e.g., /TB LGT-MOD).
- Describe icing conditions using the /IC field with standard contractions, also noting altitude if different from the FL (e.g., /IC LGT RIME).
- In the /RM section, provide any additional remarks that clarify the report. Start with the most hazardous element (e.g., /RM LLWS -15KT SFC-003).
- Once all fields are completed, you can save your changes, download a copy, print the form, or share it as needed.

If a PIREP mentions an icing comment like IC MDT rime without an associated altitude, it usually means the icing occurred in the vicinity of the reported area where ice conditions were noted. Pilots should use this information in conjunction with the Pirep Decoder to assess potential risks during their flight. Continuous monitoring of conditions is essential for safety.
