CLASSIFICATION OF DANGEROUS GOODS The International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code was developed as a uniform international code for the transport of dangerous goods by sea covering such matters as packing, container traffic and stowage, with particular reference to the segregation of incompatible substances.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is responsible for maintaining and updating the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code) which governs the vast majority of maritime hazardous materials shipments.

Class 1: Explosives Various goods based on their mass explosion hazard, projection hazard, or fire hazard. Some examples of explosives include bombs, rockets, fuses, fireworks, ammunition, and flares.

Dangerous goods in packaged form are cargoes which pose a threat to life, health or the environment due to their properties and condition during sea transport.

The objective of the IMDG Code is to enhance the safe carriage of dangerous goods while facilitating the free unrestricted movement of such goods and prevent pollution to the environment. Over the years, many maritime countries have taken measures to regulate the transport of dangerous goods by sea.
