Liquid or corrosive chemicals should never be stored on shelves above eye-level. Glass containers should not touch each other on the shelves. Secondary containers or trays should be used for chemical storage whenever possible to minimize the flow of material should a spill or rupture occur.

Chemical containers should be stored upright for several reasons. First, storing them upright helps prevent spills. If a container is stored horizontally or at an angle, there is a greater risk of the container tipping over and the contents spilling out. Second, storing containers upright makes them easier to move.

Handle corrosive and contact-hazard chemicals with all proper safety precautions including wearing both safety goggles and face shield, gloves tested for absence of pin holes and known to be resistant to permeation or penetration, and a laboratory apron or lab coat.

Labeling and Storage of Chemicals. Each container must be labeled with the identity of all hazardous chemicals and the appropriate hazard warnings. Whenever a chemical is transferred to an unlabelled container, a new label must be created and securely attached to the container.
