To help create a safer working environment, some basic elements of a plan should include: Performing a hazard assessment. Developing fall protection and fall recovery procedures. Obtaining the technical equipment needed.

This course covers material that is categorized as fall hazard basics, such as ANSI Z359 language, hazard identification, application of regulations and standards, work at height and rescue concepts, and fall prevention technique.

The general rule of thumb in regards to EM 385-1-1 certifications is that they do not normally expire. Once you have successfully completed a EM 385-1-1 course, the only requirement to keep it updated and valid is to take the 8-hour refresher course at least once a year.

Once you have identified potential fall hazards, the next step is to develop a fall hazard survey report. The point of this report is to identify methods to eliminate or control each identified hazard. The American National Standard for Fall Protection, ANSI/ASSE Z359.

Competent Person: one who can identify existing and predictable hazards in the working environment or working conditions that are dangerous to personnel and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them.

While OSHA states “employers shall provide for prompt rescue of employees in the event of a fall or shall ensure that employees can rescue themselves”, the EM 385 requires that a written Fall Rescue Plan “shall be prepared and maintained” and that employers are “to provide prompt rescue to all fallen workers.”

What Is EM 385-1-1 Training? EM 385-1-1 training educates workers about safety guidelines from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' EM 385-1-1 manual. This training helps contractors, supervisors and government employees comply with USACE safety and health requirements for military and government contract work.

Step 1 Determine walking/working surfaces are structurally safe. Step 2 Conduct a fall hazard assessment. Step 3 Eliminate the need for fall protection, if possible. Step 4 Select the appropriate type of fall protection system. Step 5 Develop rescue/retrieval procedures. ... Step 7 Provide fall protection training.
