A stretch and sweep may be done before or during the induction to encourage labour. It is a vaginal examination where the LMC or doctor inserts a finger through the cervix, if possible, separating the membranes from the uterus without breaking them.

Your contractions are coming every five minutes, lasting longer than 50 seconds and have been getting stronger for at least two to three hours. You have severe or constant abdominal pain with a tight abdomen. Your water has broken and it is clear or has a tinge of pink.

We advise that you stay in hospital once the induction has started. You will need to stay in overnight if your labour has not started by the evening. In this case your partner / birth partner will have to go home, but would be contacted to return if labour starts overnight.

Women who are over 35 years of age during pregnancy are considered to have Advanced Maternal Age (or AMA). AMA has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes including an increase rate of stillbirth, and this risk goes up for women over 40 years.

Women who have induction at 39 weeks should be allowed up to 24 hours or longer for the early phase of labor. They also should be given at least 12–18 hours after stripping of the membranes. If a woman's labor does not progress, it may be considered a failed attempt at induction.

You will have to stay in hospital if your induction is for a medical reason or if the method of induction used is a Prostaglandin pessary. This is to allow staff to monitor you and your baby at periods throughout the induction process.

Please bring your Antenatal Notes and your hospital bag with you, even if you are having an outpatient induction. From the start of the induction process, to going home with baby, sometimes parents can stay for up to 7 days. It is common to take 2-3 days for labour to start.
