To be appointed as a circuit judge you must have at least seven years' post-qualification experience, and will normally have served as a recorder (criminal side) or district judge (civil side) first.

In the federal system, 94 district courts are organized into 12 circuits, or regions. Each circuit has its own Court of Appeals that reviews cases decided in U.S. District Courts within the circuit. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit brings the number of federal appellate courts to 13.

Circuit Judges undertaking Family cases sit in the Family Court. Some Family Circuit Judges will be Designated Family Judges, who are responsible for the administration of Family justice at each major court centre.
